Introduction
We've all been there: wandering back and forth across the supermarket because "eggs" were at the top of the list and "milk" was at the bottom, despite being in the same aisle.
SmartShopper is designed to solve this inefficiency. It is an intelligent, easy-to-use shopping list app that makes grocery shopping faster and more organized by automatically grouping items by category.
In this post, I'll share the features and design philosophy behind SmartShopper.
The Problem: The Unsorted List
Most simple to-do apps treat grocery items like any other task. They are listed in the order you add them. This forces the user to mentally sort the list while navigating a busy store, leading to missed items and wasted time.
To ensure a stress-free shopping experience, the app needs to: 1. Understand what the item is. 2. Categorize it automatically (e.g., "Apples" -> Produce). 3. Group items visually so the user clears one section of the store at a time.
Key Features & Technical Implementation
1. Smart Categorization Engine
The core of SmartShopper is its ability to take raw input and organize it. When a user types "milk, apples, bread", the app doesn't just create three generic entries.
It utilizes a categorization logic that maps common grocery items to specific store categories (Dairy, Produce, Bakery). This happens instantly as items are added, ensuring the list is always sorted by aisle.
2. Quick Entry Parsing
Speed is crucial when planning a trip. Instead of adding items one by one, SmartShopper supports Quick Entry.
We implemented a comma-separated value parser that allows users to dump a mental list into a single text field.
* Input: eggs, flour, sugar, vanilla extract
* Result: Four distinct items, automatically categorized into "Dairy" and "Baking".
3. Share & Import via Text
Complex syncing accounts can be a barrier. For SmartShopper, we focused on a frictionless sharing mechanism.
Users can share their list as a formatted text message. On the receiving end, the app recognizes the format when pasted, instantly importing the items into the user's list. This allows for easy coordination between family members without needing shared accounts.
4. Accessibility First
Accessibility isn't an afterthought; it's a core feature. SmartShopper includes a built-in UI Size Toggle.
Users can switch between standard and large text/icons. This ensures that the app remains usable for everyone, even in bright store lighting or for users who need larger visual targets. Additionally, we implemented Shake to Undo, providing a quick, gesture-based way to recover accidentally deleted items.
Conclusion
SmartShopper proves that a shopping list can be more than just a digital piece of paper. By focusing on the context of how people shop—by aisle and category—we've created a tool that genuinely saves time.
